How to Stay Relevant in the Fashion Industry

Posted on: March 27, 2018

.

How to stay relevant in the fashion industry..

How to stay relevant in the fashion industry should be top priority of every business minded fashion entrepreneur.

Fashion evolves all the time, what people call fashionable in 2016 is no longer fashionable this 2018.

A fashion entrepreneur is someone that operates a business within the fashion industry directly or indirectly.

Ladies are mostly dominant in the fashion industry .

This  does not mean that Men are left out, there are so many great male designers in Nigeria and abroad.

In starting a fashion business, you should have knowledge of the particular niche you are focusing on .

Example; bespoke tailoring/fashion designer, fashion& design school, Hat/fascinator maker, shoe maker (cobbler) ,leather bag maker, jeweller etc.

Hair salon & make up belong to Beauty businesses, but sometimes, fashion entrepreneurs combine two or more of these niche to have a successful business.

However, irrespective of the niche you choose to do our main focus is on how to stay relevant in the fashion industry.

As a fashion designer.

it is no longer trendy to have only sewing machine.

Few workers then wait for customers to pop into your store to make clothes.

You do not need to buy so many fashion magazines for your customers to choose trendy styles. How to stay relevant in the fashion industry goes beyond this.

We are in the era of the internet and smart gadgets, leverage the opportunities of working smartly.

Make use of social media platforms (Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram) When you have a new product, display it on these platform.

Every 89% of target audience in the fashion and style industry are women.

it is also believed that women spend a lot of their time on social media.

hence social media is a gateway for you to display your products and services.

Online advertising is very good in staying relevant in the fashion industry.

Do not be static and say you have a lot of customers.

of course referrals are good form of staying at the top of your game.

Online advertising will create more awareness and reach more people outside your vicinity.

For start –ups in the fashion industry, you can use brand’s Facebook pages to advertise your brands.

If you have friends that are bloggers, use their platforms to display your brands at a cheaper rate.

Attending fashion Event/ shows; if you cannot afford to be at every event throughout the year.

Make, it a goal to attend at least one fashion event related to your niche or business once a year.

It might seem too much for a start -up fashion entrepreneur.

Try as much as you can to squeeze out time for events.

It might not necessarily be an expensive one, just go and display your brands. This is how to stay relevant in the fashion industry.

Network with models/influencer, be it jewellery, make up or clothing line.Hang out with models and network with them. Approach models/influencers after you have developed a relationship to wear your brands.

Do not send DMs to wear your brands immediately.

Develop a relationship first, then approach for business.

This will help you stay relevant in the fashion industry.

The popular saying “Goggle is your friend “is not just an acronym for SEO.

It is a gateway of knowing what is happening in the fashion industry.

Research on what people are wearing or the latest trends in the fashion industry by using google search.

And create your own brand to fit into the new trend.

Subscribe to free tutorials and fashion newsletters.

Also subscribe to goggle alerts for updates in the fashion industry globally.

Use goggle trends to search for latest trends in the fashion industry according to your geographical location.  Doing this will give you vast knowledge of what your target audience are searching for, in the fashion industry.  Hence helping you stay on top of your game in staying relevant in the fashion industry.

Be open to learn at all time.

As trend changes so should your brand change to incorporate the new trends in the fashion industry.

Finally, be very truthful in displaying your own designs.

I get complaints, of upcoming designers not being truthful about the designs they post, as theirs on social media channels. If a client contacts them to make the same design claimed, they end up spoiling their customers Fabric.

Some make- up artists steal pictures of other people’s work and claim  as theirs.

This is really bad for a brand, and will push away potential customers.
